Norman DeJong, DDS MPH PC
Before coming to Grant County in 1979, Dr. Norm grew up in Richland, Washington. While attending high school in Richland, he won the National Scholastic Art Contest (judged in New York City), for sculpting, 2 years in a row. He attended BYU on a basketball scholarship, Northwestern Dental School in Chicago, then on to Harvard University for his masters degree in Public Health Dentistry.
Later, Norm traveled to London as a research fellow from Harvard to work with the Minister of Health to study the UK's National Health Service.
Norm also served a one year residency with the Massachusetts Health Dept, then back to OHSU where he taught before returning east to the University of Connecticut Health Science Center for four years to help establish a new dental school and medical center. Dr. Norm then went south for the next four years to the University of Mississippi as Associate Professor and Chairman of the Department of Restorative Dentistry and helped to establish a new dental school.
The urge to enter private practice and head west came after many years in academics. The memories he had of the John Day Valley from his earlier days as a Smoke Jumper Fire Fighter brought him west again to discover Prairie City, Oregon. He bought and restored a building downtown and enthusiastically hung his shingle.
After enjoying his practice in Prairie City for 11 years, Dr. Norm was needed in Kotzebue, Alaska, where, for four years he used his Public Health background to develop dental programs for the villages in the Northwest Arctic Borough, for the Maniilaq Corporation.
In 1994, in Ambler, AK, at 43° below zero, Dr. Norm married Melanie, his Dental Hygienist.
In 1995, Dr. Norm and Melanie headed to Prairie City. When they arrived, they remodeled and reopened the dental office to live and practice dentistry, "Happily Ever After".
